VR Tower Defense

May 2025

During IGB388 (Design and Development of Immersive Environments), I created a VR tower defence game alongside three other group members. I contributed to the game by developing the bug spray tower which had a state machine powering it. I also developed the wave manager and assisted with environment set dressing. I carried out playtesting sessions and iterated on the design of the game based on the resulting feedback.

tANTrum is a tower defence VR game where players aim is to defend their picnic basket friend (Basko) from hungry ants using towers that they are able to place and maintain. The game finishes when either the player has defeated all the waves or Basko runs out of lives.

We showcased the game at the QUT Immersive Festival and at the QUT Open Day. The game is an apk file so is able to be played untethered from a computer and is uploaded to the Meta store.

Designer: Sebastian Poutanen
Programmers: Peter Erbeni & Hailey Graham
Artist/Animator: Eden Takenaka

For the bug spray towers, they inherited from a TowerBase class, implementing and overriding the base state machine (see logic implemented in C# on the left). The bug spray towers have three states: Dormant, Broken and Shoot. When the wave has not started or there is no target to shoot, the tower is dormant. When there is a target and the tower is not broken, the bug spray shoots the ants, doing Area of Effect damage. When the bug spray runs out of ammo, it is broken and the player needs to fix it.
